Boyle addresses long-timer vs. outsider

(Asheville Citizen-Times) “You’re not from around here, are you?” Anybody who’s moved to Western North Carolina has probably heard that comment, oh, at least a hundred times. Count me among them. I moved here in 1995, and I picked up on that vibe quick. The wariness, the distrust, the flat-out disdain at times, it was fairly palpable. Mountain folks are not the friendliest — until they get to know you. Then you’ll find out they’re some of the finest people you’ll meet. So, I was amused when Mike Fryar’s comments at a Board of Commissioners meeting kicked up a dust storm last week. Fryar said before people speak at meetings, he’d like to know where they live, “how long they’ve lived here and what (commissioner) district they’re in.”
